Shipping & Handling

Refrigerated Medications

How we package, ship, and protect your compounded medications — and what to do when your package arrives.

At Lake Hills Pharmacy, every prescription is dispensed from our 503A Sterile Compounding Facility and shipped with cold-chain handling in mind. This page explains how we package and ship refrigerated medications, what to do when your package arrives, and how to store your medication once you receive it.

How we package your medication

Refrigerated prescriptions are shipped in insulated foil mailers or cold canisters, packed with ice packs to help maintain a stable temperature in transit. Inside your package you will find:

  • Your medication vial(s), labeled with your prescription details.
  • Ice packs and insulating material to support temperature control.

All refrigerated shipments are marked “REFRIGERATE UPON ARRIVAL.” If you receive a cold canister, it is yours to keep. You may use it for travel, as a water bottle, or however it is helpful to you. Please open your package promptly and refrigerate any medication inside.

Shipping carriers & tracking

Lake Hills Pharmacy ships through FedEx. You will receive tracking information by email once your prescription is on its way. We recommend bringing your package indoors and refrigerating temperature-sensitive medications as soon as they arrive.

What if my package arrives warm or the ice packs have melted?

Compounded cold-chain medications are shipped nationwide, often during warm weather and long transit windows. Some heat exposure during shipping is normal, and our packaging is designed to help protect your medication even when ice packs have partially or fully melted on arrival.

If your package arrives warm, refrigerate your medication promptly upon arrival. Based on Lake Hills Pharmacy’s in-house analytical testing of our compounded formulations, these medications have maintained labeled potency after controlled heat exposure when promptly returned to refrigeration and used within the prescribed period (see stability summary below).

If you have concerns about the condition of your shipment — for example, visible damage to the vial, an unusually long delay in transit, or uncertainty about how the package was handled — please contact us before using the medication.

In-house stability summary

This stability information is based on an internal controlled analytical study performed by Lake Hills Pharmacy and is provided to help patients understand how our sterile injectables respond to elevated shipping temperatures. It does not constitute medical advice or a substitute for guidance from your prescriber. If you have concerns about the condition of your medication, contact us before using it.

How to store your medication

Once your medication arrives, follow the storage instructions on your product label. For Lake Hills compounded injectables:

  • Store between 2°C and 8°C (36°F to 46°F).
  • Refrigerate. Do not freeze.
  • Protect from light.
  • Discard any unused medicine within 28 days of first puncture, unless your prescriber indicates otherwise.

The vial may not appear completely full because the glass container is larger than the amount of medication inside; this is expected and does not indicate a short-fill.

Non-Refrigerated & Hazardous Medications

At Lake Hills Pharmacy, every prescription is dispensed from our 503A Compounding Facility and shipped with patient safety in mind. This page explains how we package and ship your medications, what to do when your package arrives, and how to store your medication once you receive it.

Your recent shipment may contain a specialized medication that requires extra care when handling. Because these medications are highly potent, following a few simple steps ensures that they work exactly as intended while keeping you safe from accidental exposure.

When your package arrives, take a moment to look over the box before opening it.

  • Inspect the package: Check the outer shipping container for any signs of damage, dampness, or staining.
  • Open with care: Carefully open the outer container. If you notice that the inner medicine container is broken, cracked, or leaking, do not touch the medication. Wash your hands immediately and call our pharmacy right away for a replacement.
  • Keep it separate: Store this medication bottle away from your regular household items, food, and out of the reach of children and pets.

How we package your medication

Medications are shipped in bubble polymailers to protect them while in transit. Inside your package you should find:

  • Your medication labeled with your prescription details.

Shipping carriers & tracking

Lake Hills Pharmacy ships non-refrigerated medications through FedEx. You will receive tracking information by email once your prescription is on its way. We recommend bringing your package indoors as soon as it arrives.

Independent pharmacies are privately owned businesses as opposed to corporately owned chain pharmacies. While chain pharmacies function more like franchises, independent pharmacies tailor their services to the needs of the communities they are a part of. That’s why you’ll find more with us: more choices, more convenience, more care.
